As a kid I grew up in Minnesota and we wore Minnetonka's all the time. I now wear almost only Rockports (never need to be broken in, lightweight etc). These chukka's do not measure up to the rockports, but they do work if you know what you are getting:
I wear a size 11 regular on shoes, and most chukkas 10.5, so I got 10.5's. They fit, but these are not wide. If you have wide feet, try and find a wider version.
the heel on these is about 1/2 inch (most chukkas have a higher heel). This gives you more of a feeling like you are barefoot than a regular chukka (which tend to feel like you are wearing boots)
this material is leather/suede, but thin. I think you could live in 50's up, but colder would be felt right through the shoe.
this is not for wet weather. The sole is plastic and sewn close to the upper, so you cannot wear these in rain or anything.
the upper is sown inside (a lot of boots and chukkas have the stitching on the outside so the sole is wider than the upper this is what contributes to the tight feel for my size.
some people do not like the fringes they are high enough up that if you wear long pants they will not show when you are standing.
these are pretty comfortable, but have no gel insert (compare the rockport's with adidas adiprene highly recommended). I will be putting in a gel insert but you will have to be careful if you order a half size down like I did, the room is pretty tight.
I am not sure how much I will wear them they will be best for spring and fall with jeans, and it is hard to beat my rockports . . . but these are pretty much what I remember as a kid and seem to be of reasonable quality.

Discount GBX Men's 09123
These are pretty nice for the price; about half the price of a Clark's desert boot. I like the distressed look of the leather but not crazy about the shiny sheen. It cheapens the look a bit in my opinion. The fit is pretty true, maybe just a hair large. I ordered down a half size from what I normally wear and they are just a hair snug in the toebox width department but since I have a narrow foot the fit is actually overall pretty nice. I actually prefer a snug fit. Overall comfort is good I'd say. Not great but good. No hotspots so far. Today is my second day of wearing them (to work) and they still feel a bit stiff but I think they will break in just fine. Hoping anyway. The only other negative I can think of is that the sole material (it's not a real crepe-sole) is very stiff which makes them, at least so far, a bit clunky to walk in. On the positive side they should wear very slowly.
I should make my wn shoes.
I don't know yet about the wear but there's no reason to believe they won't do very well. In fact, I expect the appearance to improve with age and wear.
On the downside, delivery was pretty slow.

I have other GBX shoes and like the brand. I like the color of these chukkas and the finish will keep improving as they age. They are comfortable and fit true to size and the tread has a tooth to it. They meet expectation and I would recommend them to a friend.Best Deals for GBX Men's 09123

These are about what I wanted, but I hade forgotten about all of the padding that gets put into shoes these days. If they were unlined, then they would be much better.I should make my wn shoes.

Best Red Wing Heritage Men's Classic Work Chukka Boot - Suede Deals
After going through the soles in a pair of Clark Roar in about six months, I wanted to find a more durable pair of desert boots. Every review I could find on the Red Wing Work Chukka Boots indicated that they might fit the bill. They are resolable. The leathers used are full grain.
These boots are everything the reviews said. They are sewn extremely well. The materials are first rate. The toe box is narrower than similarly sized Clark boots. The fit is different as well. The tongue is sewn in closer so that getting in and out of the boot at first is tight. There is very little cushioning. The leather insole will eventually mold itself to your foot. The leather the uppers are cut from may be more than twice as thick as my Clark Roars. All this is just to say that these boots will probably not be comfortable out of the box. They will require a break-in. If you normally wear a medium size, you might want to consider a wide in the same size.
I think these boots will be very long-lived. Once I have mine really broken-in, I think they will be my favorites.

The shoes are well built but not as comfortable as Red Wings I've had in the past. Need to wear a thick sock or cushioned insole. There's no cushioning like other Red Wing boots or shoes. Maybe I didn't read enough about them before buying. This boot has worn nicely over the past 2 years developing a nice patina and conforming to my feet gradually. It has the handmade feel of all redwing boots -a quality I've appreciated since I purchased my first pull on redwing wellingtons in 1987. I know this pair will only get better over time and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who has the patience to break it in and appreciates quality craftsmanship.
