I bought these for my husband, who was under the impression they were military-style boots with a distressed sole/heel. Once we received them, he realized these run a size smaller than every other brand of boot he owns (BedStu, Docs, Frye); typically, we would have simply exchanged them, if it wasn't for the following additional issues:

(1) The soles are less distressed-looking and more like used tires, like someone just rubbed a few streaks of black off of them;

(2) There was a HOOORRRRIIIBBBLLE smell coming off of these things. As soon as he opened the box, the entire room reeked. I can't even identify what it was it was like the mix between melted rubber, burning plastic, and a hint of old, musty leather. When he put them on and did the little walk-around-the-house test to see how they felt, every room he went into was filled with that horrid smell, and it took a good 15 20 minutes after we'd boxed the boots back up for it to dissipate;

(2) The soles are VERY thin. He has a pair of boots by BedStu that have this same style of sole, and those manage to still maintain some semblance of cushioning. He said the bottoms of these felt like the thin placemat we have under our cats' water and dinner bowls;

(3) The leather itself is very thin. This would have been fine, too, since he intended to wear these during the summer, except the material is soooo thin that he could feel the lacing grommets against the tops of his feet.

As I said, we typically would have done an exchange if it had been a simple sizing issue, but there is simply nothing salvageable about these shoes. I've been with Amazon for about ten years, and I think I may have done one return for a refund in all that time (and I only say I may have done one because I can't recall whether I did an exchange or a return on an item I purchased over 8 years ago), but this one is a definite return.

in high school I walked around in beat up Corcoran mid calf combat boots, I have never loved footwear so much. tragically as a professional, combat boots are off putting I've come to discover. I refuse to wear trendy sneakers and I hate dress shoes, they ooze pretense from out the tops of them. anyway I bought these to transcend the gap between my need for comfort, style and practicality. I read two reviews, two very polar reviews. I thought jesus, this doesn't help me very much. at any rate I took a gamble because I needed to get out of a pair of well worn gray Aldo's of a similar style id been wearing exclusively for a year and there is nothing else I have found that i'd be caught dead in. I must say it was a good choice and I side with the five-star review. the leather is nice and the boots are super clean while still retaining a sort of grunge i am inclined to retain into my old age. i ordered 10.5 and i usually wear a 10.5 but these are slightly too large. not helpful maybe but i am still thrilled with the purchase and can't wait to stomp on some bugs or some feelings with my new boots.

Shipping was really quick and arrived earlier than expected which I was happy about. It was well packaged in the original shoe box with the Steve Madden logo that was in another box from Amazon. I normally buy shoe sizes of 11.5 and 12 but I didn't want to risk having a bigger size since seeing other reviews of boots being a bit bigger than anticipated so I purchased the size 11.5 and it feels amazing walking around in. I also read that a lot of people think these boots have a very strong unpleasent scent but I didn't seem to have that case when purchasing these boots, just a regular non overpowering genuine leather smell as expected. The zipper on the sides run well up and down and makes it easy to slide your feet down into the boot. Something I've noticed that I didn't take careful seeing in the advertised picture is that the tongue flap is attached to the sides of the boots but doesn't take away from the appearance or comfort at all. The brushed worn midsole at the bottom looked better in person and wasn't overdone like the original Troopah's. The insides of the boot were very soft and easy to slide into without anything rubbing against your foot causing discomfort. I am really pleased with these boots and I highly recommend them. I hope this review helps others deciding which boots to buy and those who bought them already can agree!

Honest reviews on Steve Madden Men's Troopah2 Lace-Up Boot

I don't know what else to say other than this was the most disappointing purchase on amazon ever. The photo doesn't match the weathering on the actual product and the actual product is made so poorly that it loks and smells like a $5 pair of shoes a bordertown in mexico would try and get $20 out of.

Seriously, mexican leather smells different. If you know what I mean then you know what I mean.

I hate shoes, I absolutely hate them. I love boots though and I have a bunch of em. I just received these priceless gems from Heaven, so I can't personally attest to the durability. I don't imagine there being any issues though. What I do want to say is they don't smell funny, just like leather. They look exactly as BA in person and the color in the pictures is spot on. The thing is...the fit. The best way I can describe it is maybe like wearing a midget newborn calf as a boot. I mean that in the best way possible. Holy s**, within 2.5 sec I knew they were the most comfortable boots ever. They feel incredibly light, look great, and are basically the equivalent of your foot having sex every time you take a step. At least I'm guessing.
